Yuhuan (Vanessa) Xu, M.M. Piano Performance, DMA Candidate
Yuhuan earned her Bachelor’s degree in piano from the Capital Normal University in China. After completing it, Ms. Xu not only keep studying piano performance, but also followed her passion for teaching to become a piano teacher in Zhongyue Music Art School, Beijing China in 2010. There, Xu had the opportunity to encounter many students from different ages and background. It is the teaching experience gave Xu an opportunity to refine her knowledge about piano performance and helped her achieved clearer awareness about piano practicing methods. Ms. Xu currently is pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance under the direction of Piano Area Head Dr. Ning Lu in the University of Utah. Durmember of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and took part in the 2016 MTNA National Conference as a presenter of the University of Utah School of Music. She used to be a teaching assistant at the University’s piano area outreach program.
Yuhuan has made her first solo performance at Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall in New York City in 2016. She has also performed in different recital hall such as David Garner Concert Hall in Salt Lake City, Utah with American West Orchestra twice, Thompson Chamber Hall in Salt Lake City, Utah and Dumke Recital Hall in Salt Lake City, Utah. When she was in China, Ms. Xu performed at Art Palace of Dongcheng District in Beijing, China. Ms. Xu also actively perform with other vocalists and instrumentalists such as hornists, trombonist, clarinetists, cellists, violinists and violists both in China and America. Other than enjoying performance at different places, Yuhuan is also an active participator of piano solo and teaching competitions.
Ms. Xu has won many piano competitions including the first prize of the Helen Taylor Johannessen International piano solo competition (2017), 2018 UMTA concerto competition, the SummerArt’s video teaching 2017, and competition held by Dongcheng District’s Art Palace in Beijing, China (2003). Ms. Xu also won the second prize in both the solo and concerto division at the University of Utah SummerArts’(2015-2016), the American Protégé Piano Competition (2016), and the excellent performance prize of the seventh Beijing International “Hope Cup” piano competition (2004). Yuhuan has played wild range of repertoires from early period of time to modern composers in order to participate in these competitions. Composers such as Arcangelo Corelli, Domenico Scarlatti, Jean-philippe Rameau, Beethoven, Ravel and Lowell Liebermann, and so on.
